Deirdre Murphy

Deirdre Murphy graduated from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in Dublin with a BDes (Hons) in Craft Design specialising in Metalwork & Jewellery. Her time in NCAD encouraged her to develop her drawing, design and CAD skills as well as nurtured her creativity as a maker. She went on to receive a Design & Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI) Future Makers Award for her degree show collection in June 2015. Deirdre also undertook an Erasmus programme at MOME University of Art and Design in Budapest, Hungary.

Following graduation from NCAD, Deirdre took up a position working with Appleby Jewellers in Dublin where she gained a closer insight into the making and distribution of fine jewellery. Deirdre was invited back to work with the company for her recent work placement where she gained invaluable CAD and workshop experience.

Deirdre was selected to be a team leader as part of the Young Ambassadors programme at Homo Faber, an exhibition run by the Michelangelo Foundation in Venice during September 2018. After graduation, Deirdre hopes to progress her training and bench skills within the industry and to focus on CAD and new technologies in the manufacture of jewellery.

“This course has helped me find the balance between new technologies and fine craftsmanship. With the guidance of course tutors and guest tutors, it has allowed me to become more comfortable with my design and jewellery skills.”
