Mark Newman

Mark Newman graduated from the National College of Art and Design (NCAD) in 2015 with a BDes (Hons) in Craft Design specialising in Metalwork & Jewellery. During his time at NCAD, Mark won the Boodles Design Competition. He has developed designs for Newbridge Silverware and Solvar. Mark took part in an Erasmus programme, spending a semester at Glasgow School of Art (GSA) studying in their Silversmithing & Jewellery Department.

Following his graduation from NCAD, Mark set up his own studio and focused on producing contemporary art jewellery which he exhibited extensively in the UK and Europe, taking part in notable shows such as One Year On at New Designers, London and AUTOR International Contemporary Jewelry Fair in Romania, amongst others. In 2016, he was invited back to GSA as an Artist in Residence where he developed a new body of work and gained valuable teaching experience. This work was shortlisted in the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s (DCCoI) Future Makers Awards & Supports programme in 2018.

In June 2019, Mark was a recipient of Professional Development Support from the DCCoI Future Makers Awards & Supports programme for the work he created while on the DCCoI Jewellery & Goldmsithing Course. Mark was one of four finalists in the Bench to Business collaborative project with the Kilkenny Group and his jewellery range will be showcased in the Kilkenny Shop on Nassau Street, Dublin in September 2019. After graduating, Mark will continue to develop his own work and also hopes to gain further experience working in education.

“Undertaking this course has been a goal of mine since touring the workshops back in 2012; always knowing that I wanted to be an educator, it’s been essential for me to become as technically competent as possible and, with DCCoI’s Jewellery & Goldsmithing Course’s reputation, it was a no-brainer.”
