On Thursday evening 18th September, the Weathering exhibition of Irish craft and design at London Design Festival will be officially launched by His Excellency Daniel Mulhall, Ambassador of Ireland to Great Britain. Curated by Steven McNamara, Weathering will showcase objects that exemplify simplicity of form, respect for materials and a keen awareness of the end user, presenting over 25 Irish designers and makers working in furniture, wood, glass, ceramics, textiles, lighting, leather and basketry.

Since his appointment to Britain in September 2013, Ambassador Mulhall has played an important role in several key events including the historic State Visit of President Higgins to Britain in April 2014. He has adopted an open approach to his role as Ambassador communicating via his blog and Twitter accounts and has documented the Embassy’s ambition in promoting trade and investment to help create and sustain employment in Ireland.

Thursday evening will also see two Weathering participants take part in the Super Talks programme. The talk entitled Specialist Craftsmanship vs. Mass Production will be chaired by award winning designer and Weathering participant Andrew Clancy and will also include Weathering curator Steven McNamara.

Demonstrations by internationally renowned Irish basketmaker Joe Hogan will take place on Thursday and continue throughout Friday at the Weathering exhibition space.

Weathering builds on the story and explorations of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s two previous shows; Vernacular (LDF 13) and A Place to Gather (LDF 12).  Read more about Weathering here

Thursday 18th September, 17.00 – 18.00

Specialist Craftsmanship vs. Mass Production

How can traditional crafts honed over generations, compete with the ever increasing options for fast fabrication?  To what extent do we connect with an object because of its history? Can craftsmanship and technology work in harmony?  During this talk we aim to explore the need to look backwards to move forwards.

This talk will be chaired by award winning designer and Weathering participant Andrew Clancy.  The other speakers participating in this talk will be Weathering curator Steven McNamara (Roji Designs), Chirag Patel (Crest JMT Leather) and Tarek Merlin (Feix and Merlin).  The free but ticketed talk is part of the Super Talks programme at Tent London and Super Brands London curated by Design Exchange.
