Guilds, Associations, Networks and Societies (GANS) play a pivotal role in Design & Crafts Council Ireland's activities and supports in Ireland. Feltmakers Ireland Member Niki Collier is looking for people who love textiles and live in Ireland for a textiles show and tell online get-together in March.

Ceramics Ireland

Member Deidre McLoughlin work is featured in ‘PIONEERING WOMEN’, an exhibition featuring some 40 works by 10 pioneering female artists. The exhibition will celebrate the significant contribution this group of artists has made to the development of contemporary ceramics, with a focus on the ceramic vessel form. Oxford Ceramics Gallery: 14 February – 27 March 2021.
Uillinn Galleries West Cork Arts Centre is closed but they are active. There are currently two exhibitions on

Traces of Air is Siobhán McDonalds exhibition, scheduled to be in Gallery II, you can browse the exhibition online as well as watch a video.

Sensing Place is an exhibition of work from our School's programme with work by children from Scoil Mhuire NS, Schull; St Joseph’s Girls School, Clonakilty; and Our Lady of Mercy NS, Bantry.

Panel discussion about Irish woodturning, the closing event of the 'After the Fall' exhibition is now available on YouTube.

Society of Cork Potters Members of the Society of Cork Potters are pleased to announce some of their work is in a window display exhibition of ceramics for the month of February. The gallery is not open but the slideshow is on the gallery website
Limerick School of Art and Design

European Funded Programme, hosted by LSAD LIT, to encourage the integration of cutting-edge digital fabrication technologies into craft-making. The deadline for iAtelier Online is midnight on February 17, 2021. Application forms for the programme can be found on

Headford Lace Project ‘The Space Between’ exhibition curated by Fiona Harrington, was an international exhibition of lace, comprising artwork selected from 34 artists, from 11 countries across 4 different continents, all unified by one common interest – LACE . Borris Lacemakers

Common Threads: Laces Across The Border. This project ran throughout August and September 2020 and culminated in the creation of two collaborative art pieces and a series of films called 'Stories from home' which was premiered in a virtual event in October 2020 - Common Threads: Laces Across The Border. Borris Lacemakers

As part of their ongoing programme, Borris Lacemakers launched their new information leaflet online during Heritage Week 2020, giving information on the history of the Borris Lace industry, the lace itself, and their work in the revival of this important local heritage.

Glass Society of Ireland

The Glass Society of Ireland launched their publication which aims to represent the broad and diverse practices of glass artists within Ireland and both historical and contemporary developments in glass practices worldwide.

The Irish Guild of Embroiderers The Irish Guild of Embroiderers launched their book 'Twenty Twenty' in November to celebrate 20 years of the organisation it is available to purchase from their website.
Cork Craft & Design

Cork Craft Month launches, see more here. Each Wednesday there will be an Artist Takeover on Instagram. This Wednesday, tune in to CC&D Instagram as Furniture Maker Cian's Creative Concepts takes over the account as he shares a day in his workshop in Cork.

Benchspace Cork

During the PPE Project 1,040kg of printer filament was used to make over 50,000 face shields. Read the full report here. Benchspace Cork are delighted to welcome jewellery makers Annemarie Reinhold and Alex Thiel Goldsmith to the workshop. Alex specialises in remaking vintage jewellery into stunning modern designs and Annemarie creates amazing nature inspired pieces. You can check out their profiles here.

Council of Irish Fashion Designers (CIFD)

Theo + George and Caroline Mitchell have been featured in the new issue of Irish Country Magazine as some of Celia Holman Lees favourite designers.

Clare Crafts (CC) Due to unprecedented circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 CC have postposed all craft fairs for the foreseeable months. CC will review the situation again towards the end of the year. In the meantime, they are still busy crafting and can be contacted individually at any time.
Na Píobairí Uilleann New video featuring some past students of the instrument making course in conjunction with BCFE. From September onwards, this course will include harp and mandolin/mandola making in addition to uilleann pipes, flute and whistle. You can find our official press release with all info here. ICA had a lovely surprise to open up the last edition of Woman's Way, to see their own ICA ladies on page 18!! A wonderful write-up about our "Sew Scrubs for Ireland" initiative, the article interviews wonderful collaborator Sinéad Lawlor, as she details the importance and success of the project at the height of COVID-19.

Irish Artists Blacksmiths Association

Jane Murtagh installed a sculpture at the Four Seasons Hotel commissioned by the McKenna family. This piece has 32 forged leaves set into a turned cedar solid ball , the plinth is also cedar. The patination reflects the variations in colour throughout the seasons. 

Irish Guild of Embroiderers

Exhibition 'Twenty Twenty'
An Exhibition of Textile work by The Irish Guild of Embroiderers with invited guests, The Northern Ireland Embroidery Guild as the IGE celebrate their 20th, and the NIEG celebrate their 40th Anniversaries. Embracing fabric manipulation and embellishment, traditional and contemporary embroidery, dyeing and printing, presented in a variety of forms including framed work, wall hangings, bunting and 3D objects.

MADE in Sligo With facemasks becoming mandatory in shops Made in Sligo would like to compile a list of independent Sligo based makers hand making masks.

Borris Connections exhibition officially started until 30th August, opens Thursdays to Sundays from 12pm to 5pm, Borris House, Carlow.

National College of Art & Design (NCAD) National College of Art & Design, Dublin ‘The Reprint Project’, an innovative collaboration between National College of Art & Design and Kingspan Water & Energy. The research project explored how digital technology offers new tools for engaging with materials. The results included an innovative exhibition of wearable art. Find out more here.

Wexford Craft Trail/Network

Both Gráinne Kenny Design & John Dunn Automata alongside two other Irish artists feature in the July/August issue of the USA subscriber magazine ‘Ireland of the Welcomes’. Ireland of the Welcomes. Both members are inspired by the Sea, and both discuss alongside painter, Aíne Ní Chiobhan & Designer/Illustrator Sara O’Neill what the Sea means to them. John is known for his incredible moving Automata of lighthouses and gulls etc. While Gráinne is best known for her unique colourful pieces of Textile Art inspired by Sea & sky. This magazine is not available in shops but you can subscribe online for a small monthly fee. Thank you to Journalist Deanna O’Connor who wrote the article.
Glass Society of Ireland (GSOL) GSOL are launching a new hashtag #stainedglassnearby @glasssocietyofireland to encourage people to photograph their favourite local #stainedglass. Tag the location and any information you may have, so other #stainedglass fans may add it to their list to visit. We'll reshare with our community so all can enjoy. 
Benchspace Cork Benchspace has been overwhelmed by the support from students and makers over the last few weeks. A number of our evening classes for autumn are now sold out, still have a few spots in Frame Joinery & Machine Skills evening classes and Green Woodworking & Laser cutting weekends. 
Borris Lace Borris Lace are in the process of writing their first information leaflet on the history of Borris lace. This was funded by NSS and DCCI.
Spiddal Craft Village & Café Spiddal Craft Village & Cáfe is slowly emerging from lock down and ready to extend a warm Irish céad míle fáilte to staycationers this summer. With eight artist run studios and the award-winning Builin Blasta Cafe & Bakery.
Clare Crafts Association Clare Crafts Association will not be able to hold its summer craft fairs due to the current covid restrictions but is busy crafting and can be contacted anytime. Feel free to have a look at their website.
The Leitrim Design House Open for Business! The Leitrim Design House is looking forward to welcoming you all back soon. Behind the scenes they are working hard to get ready to re-open mid-July. Remember our online shop is open 24/7 and they also offer a Click & Collect service. Your support means a lot to them and they have some exciting give-aways planned to celebrate, so watch this space.

Cork Craft Month launch

As CC&D they are preparing for the launch of Cork Craft Month in August, they put together a special CORK CRAFT SHOWCASE series featuring some of our inspirational makers. Watch Rosemary Kavanagh of Wild Rose Basketry, chatting about why she loves the work of fellow basket maker Alison Fitzgerald from Greenwood Baskets. The Cork Craft Showcase celebrates the work makers love of another Irish craft person.  Keep an eye on CC&D Social media channels for more and get involved by letting them  know what your favourite piece of Irish craft is or send us an image of your DIY craft by using the hashtag #corkcraftmonth20.

CC&D hopes this will whet the appetite for Cork Craft Month this August, a 31-day celebration of craft.

It is with great sadness that the IGOE wish to inform you of the death of Debbie Wilson, Debbie was a colleague and friend and who managed our Facebook page. Debbie was an excellent embroiderer with great skills and she was committed to educating and informing others about the joy of embroidery and textile work. The committee and members of the Irish Guild of Embroiderers are shocked and saddened by Debbie's sudden death and extended their heartfelt sympathies to her beloved family and many friends.

Zoom Spin Café

All interested spinners are invited to take part in a Zoom Spin Café on Sat 27th June from 5pm to 7pm. the Tour de France cycling race was originally scheduled to start on Sat 27th June. You may also know that as the cyclists cycle, spinners around the world spin in the Tour de Fleece. In other words, while they spin, we spin.

The Tour de France has been postponed but the Tour de Fleece is still going ahead on Sat 27th June until Sunday July 19th, 2020.

So to kickstart the Tour (or just to have a chance to spin and chat with other spinners), the Irish Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers are hosting a Zoom Spinning meeting on Sat 27th June, from 5pm to 7pm.  All are welcome to join in.


Media Profile.  RDS will profile the 2020 Craft Award winners,. Each winner was awarded a €10,000 bursary and a free stand Gifted - The Contemporary Craft & Design Fair at the RDS in December 2020.  Bookbinder - Éilís Murphy is based in Co.Clare. Éilís has a BA in Fine Art (Print) from the National College of Art & Design, Dublin Her bookbinding involves the use of traditional techniques that have remained unchanged for centuries, combined with contemporary design and artistic innovation. Éilís plans to use the bursary money to research and develop a ready-made range of handmade books. She will also undertake further training in book design and production in London to enable her to concentrate further on limited-edition art books.
