Benchspace Designer in Residence 2022

Benchspace invites applications from established creative professionals for the 2022 Designer in Residence. Applications are also welcomed from academic staff of creative programs in any discipline seeking a period of return to a professional workshop environment.

The Designer in Residence Programme brings established designers & makers to Cork, Ireland to showcase their work and contribute fresh perspectives to the professional makers at Benchspace.

The residency programme will afford the successful candidate the opportunity to create a new body of work or facilitate the exploration of innovative methodologies. It also provides an in-depth opportunity for local professional makers and the wider community to learn from the Designer in Residence during workshops, lectures, and collaborations.

The residency will take place across August and September of 2022, during which the resident will have opportunities to present to the public for Cork Craft Month (August), sharing
their ongoing work with a wider Audience.

The residency also includes full access to Benchspace’s professional workshops and a dedicated studio workspace.

Benchspace are Ireland’s first open access factory, offering industry grade tools, technology and business support for professional makers & creative start-ups.

The closing date for applications is 14th July 2022.

Benefits

  • €2,000 expenses to cover travel and accommodation.

  • Locally-sourced materials will be provided for a significant project. (Maximum: €300).

Expectations

  • Commitment to be present for a minimum of 30 hours per week in the workshop for a period of 8 weeks.
  • Engage in collaboration, and peer knowledge sharing with makers at benchspace.
  • Delivery of public lectures, demonstrations or classes on an agreed topic.
  • Sharing of progression through social media channels.
  • Creation of a new body of work or methodology to be publicly exhibited.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrate a high level of professional creative achievement.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated, ability to work independently, and critical thinker.
  • Be living outside of County Cork

Further Information
The expected duration of the Residency is 2 months, commencing in August 2022. Selection criteria will include quality of current portfolio, potential for professional growth, technical skill, and ability to communicate and collaborate in a shared
workshop environment.

Cork Craft Month is held in August and celebrates the diversity of design manufacturing availablein Cork City and County. There is a full and exciting programme of exhibitions, open studios, free demonstrations, and workshops throughout the county.

Applications

Applicants for the Benchspace Designer in Residence - 2022 should submit the following:

  • Letter of Intent (one-page) outlining artistic direction of work, interpersonal skills, and proposal for work to be carried out during residency.
  • Current C.V.
  • Portfolio – minimum 5 unique pieces of work.
  • References – Two professional references. Preferably one academic and one from within the applicant’s discipline.
  • Indication of available dates in August / September 2022 to participate in residency.

Applications will be acknowledged on receipt. A Selection Committee will review submissions. Successful applicants will be notified via email upon the Selection Committee’s decision.
