Design & Crafts Council Ireland marks its 50th Anniversary with exhibitions and special events in Dublin Castle, including the World Crafts Council Europe General Assembly.

13th – 15th October 2021

In October 1970, the World Crafts Council International held its 4th General Assembly in Ireland. This event's legacy was the foundation of Crafts Council of Ireland, established in October 1971. 50 years on the Design & Crafts Council Ireland [DCCI] is hosting the World Crafts Council Europe (WCCE) General Assembly in October 2021, which will take place in Dublin Castle. Directors of Craft Councils and WCC board members are travelling from across Europe to attend this important event.

To mark this auspicious occasion and its connection to DCCI’s 50th Anniversary, a series of events are taking place in Dublin castle over a 3 day period to highlight the impact of craft and design in Ireland. As part of this, DCCI is hosting an opening reception for 'Irish Craft Heroes', to highlight Ireland's most impactful, innovative makers over the last 50 years and presenting one maker with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

These events will also incorporate the opening of ‘What Colour is Metal?’, an exhibition that brings together innovative master metalworker from across the world. It considers the relationship between metal and colour in contemporary silversmithing and jewellery. Both exhibitions are presented in partnership with the Office of Public Works.
