‘A historic moment for design in Europe’. Design & Crafts Council Ireland welcome launch of New European Bauhaus initiative. National agency to host series of events to see how Ireland can benefit from EU movement

Design & Crafts Council Ireland has welcomed the launch of the website for the European Commission’s innovative New European Bauhaus initiative.

Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has described the New European Bauhaus as a movement to act as “a bridge between the world of science and technology and the world of art and culture”. With its aim to make Europe carbon neutral by 2050 and to renovate 35 million buildings by 2030, the initiative seeks to create a European Green Deal aesthetic combining innovative design with sustainability under the motto that “the necessary can also be beautiful”.

Design & Crafts Council Ireland, the national agency for the commercial development of Irish designers and makers, described the New European Bauhaus as “a historic moment for design in Europe”. Working closely with its partners in the Bureau of European Design Associations (BEDA), the Design & Crafts Council is looking forward to assisting its members, the wider design community in Ireland and any industry stakeholders who are interested in becoming involved with the Europe-wide co-design process.

The New European Bauhaus initiaitive is a very exciting development for the design sector in Ireland and across Europe. It is very encouraging to see the European Commission incorporate design and design thinking into its policy process to this extent and this represents a huge opportunity for the design sector.

BEDA Board member and Interim DCCI Chair

Today’s launch of the New European Bauhaus website marks the beginning of the design phase of the initiative. Over the coming months the European Commission will collect ideas and examine submissions from interested parties across Europe. During the summer, the Bauhaus team will analyse the data and prepare calls for applications for five successful pilot projects.

The European Commission has opened the door to ideas and contributions across Europe, and to assist this the Design & Crafts Council is hosting a series of events “to start a conversation” in Ireland about the EU initiative: what the New European Bauhaus should be and how Ireland can benefit from it. The events are scheduled to take place next month, with a view to submitting a submission based on the discussion results to the European Commission by early March.

Design & Crafts Council Ireland events are being coordinated by the agency’s European Programme Project Manager Nikola Tomić. If anyone is interested in getting involved in the initiative they can contact Nikola directly on 083 023 1195 or via email: [email protected]

Background to the New European Bauhaus initiative

On September 16, 2020, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced the New European Bauhaus initiative as part of her State of the Union Address.
The New European Bauhaus has been styled as a cultural movement to accompany the EU’s European Green Deal and the Renovation Wave, aiming to reduce Europe’s carbon emissions and making Europe carbon neutral by 2050.
Under the motto that “the necessary can also be beautiful”, the initiative has been devised as a Europe-wide co-design process.
