Join us for a Festival of Collaborative Creativity!

5pm – 8.30pm, Friday 20th September 2019
National Design & Craft Gallery, Castle Yard, Kilkenny

On this year's Culture Night on Friday 20th September, join us for a fabulous Festival of Collaborative Creativity and realise the joy of being creative and working in the moment! The Castle Yard will be transformed for the night with music and creativity and will be a truly inviting and festive environment for all ages. Take part in our free family-friendly drop-in workshops, have fun in the creative free play area and enjoy gallery mini-tours. Adults can enjoy a glass of wine and everyone can engage in the fabulous range of activities on offer, including drumming, drawing, jewellery making, printing and textiles.

Our Culture Night events, workshops and installation are inspired by our thought-provoking exhibition Crowded Thresholds at the National Design & Craft Gallery which can be viewed on the night. Coinciding with the centenary of Freud's essay, 'The Uncanny', Crowded Thresholds showcases thought-provoking pieces by established and emerging practitioners working across different disciplines in applied art, design and visual art, and explores ‘emotional geography’, generating a fascinating visual interplay between authentic storytelling and artistic expression. Presented with a sense of playfulness and infectious imagination, this intriguing group exhibition displays objects by established and emerging practitioners – all of whom are based in Ireland or linked to this country – that are connected by a desire to make the invisible visible and have a fundamental interest in traditional processes and materials.

This playful workshop will provide participants with a variety of materials and objects to choose from, around which they will build their altar. Examples include fabric, needle and threads, ribbon, flowers, real and fake, wire, old toys, shells, pebbles, dried grasses, and pen and paper. Participants are also invited to bring their own material/object to work with.

Your Face is a Work of Art

You use a glass mirror to see your face; you use works of art to see your soul.” George Bernard Shaw

Blackstack Studio, in collaboration with the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI), will host ‘Your Face is a Work of Art’ and live screenprinting as Gaeilge with Nadia Cullinane and Angelina Foster. These mobile art stations will take place in the courtyard of DCCoI.

Blackstack Studio relief and screen print workshops use a collage of different print block stamps and stencils to create a piece of art as unique as you are; in fact, YOU are the model, maker and masterpiece in this workshop! Visitors will screenprint their own bag or tee by hand and hang to dry, returning later in the evening to pick it up. The bags will be printed in yellow and black to present Kilkenny colours.

Print your own selfie on a unisex Tee, Tote Bag or paper – tees on a first-come, first-served basis.
