30 October, 2014 - 02 November, 2014

For the past 3 years, the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s annual PORTFOLIO exhibition at the RHA has been showcasing the best of contemporary Irish craft and design from world-class makers with international reputations.

In 2014, for the first time, PORTFOLIO will coincide with VUE, the National Contemporary Art Fair, making the RHA Gallery a one-stop shop for lovers of art and design in the final weekend of October.

PORTFOLIO will present new work from 31 contemporary makers, several of whom were recently featured in Weathering, the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland’s widely celebrated exhibition at Tent London as part of London Design Festival 2014.  All pieces in the RHA exhibition will be available to purchase, providing visitors with a unique opportunity to acquire work from internationally collected and emerging practitioners.

“We are thrilled to be holding PORTFOLIO over the same weekend as VUE at the RHA this year,” said Ciara Garvey, Development Manager, Collector & Tourism Programmes at the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland. “The involvement of the RHA has been vital to the success of PORTFOLIO, and it is a timely development that we will show the highest standards in Irish craft and design alongside the very best of Irish contemporary art.”

Curated by Josephine Kelliher, PORTFOLIO will showcase exceptional objects from contemporary makers who are working to the very highest international standards.  “In this exhibition, innovative and surprising forms are skilfully created from metals, fabrics, wood, glass, found objects and fired clays,” said Kelleher. “This PORTFOLIO presentation is an indication of the dynamic talent of craft makers in Ireland.”

Karen Hennessy, Chief Executive of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland added: “The PORTFOLIO programme serves to further enhance Ireland’s reputation as a world class source of contemporary craft.  It presents the outstanding skill and beauty inherent in the work of talented Irish designer makers to national and international collectors and commissioning bodies and acts as a valuable reference for curators, galleries and museums.”

Throughout the four day exhibition, PORTFOLIO will feature a range of unique and innovative objects including:  Jack Doherty’s dramatic yet functional porcelain, Rachel McKnight’s quirky jewellery, Úna Burke’s wearable leather sculptures, Eily O’Connell’s intricate rings and jewellery, Mandy Parslow’s tactile landscape embedded ceramics, Fergal O’Leary’s beautiful handmade chairs, Joe Hogan’s exquisitely woven willow baskets and Zelouf & Bell’s handcrafted furniture designs inspired by the paintings of Sean Scully.
