Interviews

Gabriela Joyce is an artist and designer from Mexico currently based in Dublin. She enjoys creating projects such as illustrations, murals and lettering. Her style focuses on modern, colourful compositions inspired by design from the early 20th century.

She has worked with different types of clients, from commercial to private commissions that have allowed her to gain valuable experience transforming spaces and bringing them back to life.

This can vary depending on current projects but If I don’t have commissions to paint murals, I work in the studio.

Once settled into the studio early in the morning, I typically immerse myself fully in my design work, which could be working on client projects, developing new concepts or refining existing designs. I like working with natural lighting, it makes me feel more productive and stimulates my creativity.

To prevent burnout, I often take some breaks from my main projects throughout the day. This could involve experimenting with new techniques, working out, visiting museums or art galleries, seeking out new sources of inspiration or just going for a walk to get some fresh air and clear my mind.

Inspiration can come from the most unexpected places, so keep your eyes and mind open to the world around you. Explore different art forms, cultures, and experiences to fuel your creativity. Don’t be afraid to take risks and try new things, design is a field that rewards experimentation and innovation.

I find inspiration mostly from the beauty of nature, I love flowers, and the human invention of art and design. My work aims to infuse that energy, creating pieces with bold juxtaposition of colours that resonate with positivity and joy.

My little alebrije dog that I brought back from Mexico that reminds me so much of home. Alebrijes are beautiful Mexican folk art sculptures of fantastical animals, creatively painted with funky colours.

What advice would you give someone who is considering a career in design?
