Meet the Maker

Through her business Claddagh Design, Cork based goldsmith Eileen Moylan creates contemporary Irish jewellery, inspired by the past. Each of Eileen’s unique creations are handcrafted from precious metals, silver and golds using traditional techniques.

What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?

In the Claddagh Design workshop, my day starts with checking and preparing orders. Many of our customers are overseas so we always have orders waiting for us in the morning. After lunch, I am back at the bench working on custom pieces. I work on commissions for engagement and wedding rings. I spend late afternoons sketching or picking stones for the various projects I am working on.

Take advice and help wherever you can get it. Because of its size, jewellery is the perfect craft to start in a small space.

What do you like most about your work?

I love making. There is something extremely satisfying about seeing your full days work laid out on the bench. I also love being able to turn people’s ideas into physical pieces of jewellery that can be worn and enjoyed for many years to come.

Clean my face! I always have smudges of polishing dirt or dust on my face.

How do you switch off?

Kids, yoga and plenty of walks.

What advice would you give someone who is considering this craft career?

Just start making. Take advice and help wherever you can get it. Because of its size, jewellery is the perfect craft to start in a small space. You can also get by with a limited amount of tools until you grow your business.

How do you start your day?

Always with a cup of tea and a list of to do’s.
