Meet our Members

Sara Cunningham-Bell is a sculpture artist and painter working from the north coast of Ireland. She produces bespoke, professional fine art sculpture and paintings; working at a local and international level from her Gorse Lane Studio.

Whether In commission or competition, Sara’s work ranges from large expressive pieces to small, intimate works of art. Her creations are figurative in form and documentary in approach, designed with strong relevance to the site location, client and stakeholder.

What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?

A typical day kick starts off with admin and online work, then I move into the studio. My studio is a long building which looks like an upside down boat built from wood which we forested, cut, and carved. The area is divided into a sculpture space, which has most of the heavier machinery and ventilation, and then the 2D area for drawing and painting. The latter tends to be cleaner! The evening work is back to admin in my office zone.

What do you like most about your work?

I love its many contrasting aspects; from admin to hugely physical sculpture work to the quieter canvas executions. It is fantastic the amount of people I meet and bring into a project, especially if it is a public commission; I offer opportunities for others to apply their skill sets in completing a final piece e.g. an engineer, or a shot blaster – that is a special aspect.

What’s your favourite craft item in your home?

A hand made honey pot, is probably the most loved crafted item in our home, in a multi-coloured stoneware glaze.

What advice would you give someone who is considering this craft career?

Be passionate, let yourself be excited about the material and work concepts, never create safely. Work separate from any applause. Never seek acknowledgement to drive your work.
