Warren Hayes is a woodworker and furniture designer who runs his business, Coolree Design, from his studio nestled in the protected bogs of Kildare.
Each Coolree Design hand-crafted piece adheres to an ethically-minded ethos rooted in using only sustainably-sourced solid timber to bring these beautiful and functional designs to life. Handmade in Ireland, no two items are the same.
What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?
It varies a lot, each day is different depending on what I’m working on. There’s a nice mix between one-off bespoke commissions and small batch production runs. For the bespoke work, there tends to be a nice flow throughout the whole process. It starts with cutting and machining the raw planks into components, next comes the joinery which is probably my favourite part of the project.
Once all the joints have been cut, I move on to shaping and carving and finally lots of sanding! The whole process can take anywhere from a week, to a couple of months to complete.

What do you like most about your work?
I love it all, I’ve been making for around 20 years now and still look forward to going into the workshop every morning. There’s always new ideas I want to work on and projects to look forward to.
What advice would you give someone who is considering this craft career?
Go for it, take your time and enjoy learning the craft.
What’s the first thing you do when you leave the studio?
Well it used to be replying to emails, but we’ve recently had a little baby girl, so now I spend my time playing and trying to make her laugh!
