What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?

I start my mornings very early with a cup of coffee and a look at my emails. My working day is run by my diary and I usually have 5 or 6 tasks to do each day. Roughly my days are split between handcrafting jewellery and a lot of other administrative tasks/designing/planning behind the scenes. If I am making that day, I turn on my favourite playlist or podcast on Spotify. I could spend up to 10 hours working away. I go into another world and get engrossed in my work when I am creating. On administration days there’s lots of decisions to be made and research to be done. I usually finish up around 5pm but some days, like on the run up to Christmas, I could be in my studio until bed time!

What do you like most about your work?

That I am always creating something new. I love how there is so many different materials available to me which opens so many doors.

What’s the first thing you do when you leave the studio?

I sit on my couch and hug and play with my dogs – can you tell I am a teeny bit in love with them??

How do you switch off?

I’ve recently taken up beginners skating with a local roller derby team and that tires me out – which is what I need! I also love reading – once I start a book, it’s all I can think about so I usually finish them in 2 days. I find that a great way to stop thinking about the business!

What advice would you give someone who is considering this craft career?

Be prepared for long days and never being able to switch off – there are many stressful days, but if you love it, the wins triumph over it all. Give yourself time to find your own style too. Just know that you’ll always regret the things you didn’t do more than the things that you did – so go for it!
