Introduction to Lost Wax Carving for Jewellery

Throughout the two days, participants will explore a range of essential techniques, including working with different types of carving wax, accurate measuring and shaping, ring carving, surface texturing, and basic wax repair.

By the end of the course, each student will have completed at least one cast-ready wax model. All pieces produced will be cast in sterling silver, cleaned and finished, and mailed to the participants.

This course is open to both DCCI members and members of the public.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon completion, learners will be able to:
    • Understand the lost-wax casting process and where wax carving fits within it
    • Identify different jewellery waxes and their uses
    • Understand different methods for transferring your design onto wax, ready for carving
    • Safely and confidently use wax carving tools
    • Translate design ideas into three-dimensional wax forms
    • Carve, refine, texture, and repair wax jewellery models
    • Produce clean, structurally sound wax models ready for casting

Who Should Attend

  • This course is suitable for all levels, and no prior jewellery experience is required.

Over the two days students will complete 1-2 completed wax models, such as:

  • Rings
  • Small pendants

All models will be finished to casting standard by you, then professionally cast in sterling silver and cleaned before being returned to you approximately two weeks after the course.


Know Your Instructor

Eimear Vize is an award-winning Irish designer and maker of fine jewellery. Working from her studio just outside Inistioge in County Kilkenny, she handcrafts each piece using a mix of traditional goldsmithing techniques and contemporary processes. As the DCCI jewellery tutor on the BA (Hons) in Jewellery & Goldsmithing, Eimear enjoys teaching students of all levels, bringing a friendly and fun approach to the studio.

She helps students build confidence, develop their skills, and explore their creativity, providing practical, supportive guidance to create jewellery that is professionally-crafted and reflects their own unique style.
