Learning Outcomes
- By the end of the course, participants will have completed a range of sample pieces to take home with them, and some may create a small item such as a pendant or earrings.
- The class offers personalised instruction, with ample opportunities for questions and interaction with other students.
Who Should Attend
- Skill level is beginner to advanced. Familiarity with basic hand tools and jewellery making skills is helpful but it is not essential. Makers with craft skills in other mediums may have transferable skills. You will need good eyesight or good glasses, a steady hand and patience. You will be provided with a starter pack of materials, which will include Britannia silver, a charcoal block, paintbrush, and fusing liquid, all of which can be taken home so that you can continue using this beautiful technique at home.
We’ll kick things off with a fascinating presentation on the history and context of granulation, along with an introduction to the theory of soldering and relevant technical information. Students will prepare their materials using rollers and wire drawing, with an emphasis on the importance of size. They will then make two different types of granules—odd sizes and even sizes—on a charcoal block. Following this, students will prepare a chemical soldering solution with a copper compound and carefully lay out their granules on a backing plate. The day concludes with soldering sample pieces using the prepared chemical solution.
On day two, students will explore different ways to arrange granules, including point, linear, field, and cluster patterns. They will also experiment with combining granules with wires and other decorative elements. The session includes consideration of how granules can be applied to more complex three-dimensional structures or used without a backing plate. There may be an opportunity to look at some simple press tools. Students who wish to work in gold may begin, while others continue developing their projects in silver.
Students will select their best and most relevant samples to develop into finished pieces. They will consider various finishing processes and how to combine granulation with conventional soldering techniques and their existing practice. The course wraps up with a review of the work between students and the tutor, providing a final opportunity for questions and discussion.
