Meet the Maker

Anna Langrish is a painter and ceramicist. Paintings in mixed media, wildlife, birds, landscapes and abstracts. Happy when creating and constantly changing and evolving. Living in Ireland since 1976, and in Cork for the last 17 years, near the sea, surrounded with cats, dogs and pet pigs and a beautiful garden. Now living above the gallery/café and having another gallery in Kenmare in Kerry, where Anna shows her originals and selected work from other artists.

What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?

I work in the pottery in the summer – usually making in the morning and glazing in the afternoons, interspersed with raku firings.
What do you like most about your work?

The variety of processes – from collecting driftwood for using with the finished pieces, to rolling, making, glazing firing and the surprise of the cleaning of the fired pieces – always uncontrollable and exciting!
What do you like least about your work?

The dust and smoke.
What’s your favourite craft item in your home?

A large vessel by a Cornish ceramicist, Michelle Cowmeadow.
What other maker in your discipline do you most look up to?

Thomas Woollen.

What advice would you give someone who is considering this craft career?

Take every possible precaution to avoid inhaling toxic dust.
How do you start your day?

Coffee and a walk with our 3 dogs.
What’s the first thing you do when you leave the studio?

Wonder around the garden which is open to the public all summer. Watering the polytunnels, playing in my potting shed, then a big glass of wine.
