Meet the Maker

Wizard & Grace launched in October 2022 and was created out of an unrequited search for sustainable essential oil candles that combined genuinely natural ingredients with vibrant design and the power of essential oils.

After giving birth to her daughter she became intolerant to synthetic and chemical fragrance. Paula found that the majority of candles in the market today, even those that claim to be natural use synthetic artificial fragrance to scent.

Wizard & Grace products are made from 100% plant-based sustainable ingredients. The candles smell beautiful and they also support your wellbeing through the therapeutic value of essential oils.

What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?

Every day is different. I have studio days, office days and many days that combine both. I am also a participant in Enterprise Ireland New Frontiers 2 in the Rubicon Centre, Cork which is full-time so it is a juggle!

My typical day in studio is getting in early as possible to switch on the wax melter. I then typically do the breakfast and school run then come back to studio, typically clean and label any candles made on the preceding day and pack away. Then pack up any orders from the day before or the morning. Then set out the essential oils and blend with the melted wax. Prep the glasses with wicks and wait for the perfect temperature to pour.

If I have any exhibitions coming up I try to do a little bit of prep work every day, packing up gift boxes and tidying as I go.

Once candles are poured they need to be left to set for 24 hours so the finishing work has to be done the following day.

There are a lot of different elements, It's so important to be flexible and keep an open mind.

What do you like most about your work?

I love the freedom of running my own company. I love hard work and this doesn’t phase me luckily as it is a lot more work in ways but you have more autonomy which is the positive.

I also like spreading the word about essential oil candles and raising awareness about the importance of common sense ways to support our wellbeing.

I also love interacting and talking to customers both online and in person.

What’s your favourite craft item in your home?

I like really nice visual art on my walls so my favourite arts and craft items are my original art and prints.

How do you switch off?

I do find it really hard to switch off. I like really good comedy though and this does help switch off. I like reading books, journalling, yoga and running/walking. I’m definitely in better form and more productive when I get a chance to do these things!

What advice would you give someone who is considering this craft career?

There are a lot of different elements, It’s so important to be flexible and keep an open mind.

How do you start your day?

I try to start with gratitude. I remember reading something a while back that recommended we say ‘thank you’ as we put our feet on the floor for the first time. Do I do it all the time? No but I try to when I think of it. Usually the morning routine is busy but I always make time for morning cuddles with my daughter before the busy day begins.
