What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?

A typical day in the studio starts with preparing the workspace and gathering the necessary materials and tools. The first task might be painting concrete Wabi-Sabi spheres, lamps, etc. In parallel, preparations for wholesale orders are made. This may involve organizing inventory, packaging finished products, and ensuring that the orders are complete and ready for shipment. In addition to these tasks, creative brainstorming and sketching sessions may occur to develop new designs or explore different techniques.

These sessions can be valuable for generating ideas and expanding artistic horizons. Collaboration with other artists or engaging with customers might also be part of the routine. This could involve discussing projects, sharing insights, or providing guidance and support.

At the end of the day, the studio is tidied up, tools are properly stored, and any ongoing projects are secured for the next session. Reflecting on the day’s accomplishments and planning for the following day may also take place, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity of work. Throughout the day, it’s important to take short breaks to rest your mind and body, hydrate, and maintain focus.

Additionally, keep an eye on the weather forecast, as concrete work may be affected by outdoor conditions. Adapt the schedule accordingly to make the most efficient use of your time in the studio.

What do you like most about your work?

One of my favourite aspects of my work is the uniqueness of each concrete piece. I appreciate how every item I create has its own distinct character and individuality, making it truly special. Painting is another aspect of my work that I find particularly enjoyable.

It serves as a form of meditation for me, allowing me to immerse myself in the process and find a sense of calm and focus. Collaborating with other artists and designers is also something I deeply appreciate. It allows for the exchange of ideas, inspiration, and the opportunity to create something unique by combining our different perspectives and skills. These aspects of my work contribute to a fulfilling and enriching experience, making each day in the studio rewarding and inspiring.

What do you like least about your work?

One of my least favorite tasks is washing molds for concrete. It can be a tedious and time-consuming process that requires thorough cleaning to ensure the molds are ready for reuse. Although it is an essential step, I find it less enjoyable compared to other aspects of my work. Similarly, administrative work is not something I particularly enjoy. Dealing with paperwork can sometimes feel burdensome and take away from the more creative and hands-on aspects of my work.
While these tasks are necessary for the smooth operation of the studio and the business side of things, they are not my preferred activities. Nonetheless, I recognize their importance and strive to handle them efficiently to maintain the overall productivity and success of my work.

What’s your favourite craft item in your home?

My favorite craft item in my home is a concrete and steel coffee table that I made using an upcycled metal frame. This unique piece combines the industrial appeal of steel with the rugged beauty of concrete, creating a striking and functional centrepiece for my living space.

The process of creating this coffee table involved repurposing a metal frame, giving it new life and purpose. I then poured and shaped the concrete to fit the dimensions of the frame, carefully crafting the tabletop to achieve the desired aesthetic and functionality.

Don't be afraid to experiment: Embrace a spirit of curiosity and innovation. Take risks and push the boundaries of your craft.

What other maker in your discipline do you most look up to?

Japanese ceramic artists who embody the wabi-sabi spirit create pottery that is humble, unadorned, and bears the marks of the artist’s hand. Their pieces often showcase organic forms, earthy colours, and a sense of quiet elegance. Through their work, they capture the essence of nature and the serenity that comes with embracing life’s imperfections.

How do you start your day?

To kickstart my day, I begin with yoga and breathing exercises inspired by the techniques of Wim Hof. The combination of yoga and Wim Hof-inspired breathing exercises helps me start my day on a positive and centred note. It allows me to ground myself, connect with my breath, and cultivate a sense of balance and inner harmony. These practices serve as a foundation for my overall well-being and provide me with a solid mental and physical framework to navigate the day ahead.

What’s the first thing you do when you leave the studio?

As soon as I leave the studio, my top priority is to spend quality time with my family. I believe in the importance of nurturing and cherishing the bonds we share. Engaging in activities that bring us joy, such as cooking together, playing games, or going for outings, strengthens our family bond and reinforces the values we hold dear. spending quality time with my family is an essential part of my routine. It brings me a sense of joy, love, and grounding that nurtures both my personal and professional well-being.
