The Narrow Space is a gallery and gift shop located on Mitchell Street in Clonmel, County Tipperary. Established in 2003, it combines a welcoming retail space showcasing the work of over 70 Irish makers and designers with a vibrant upstairs gallery that hosts exhibitions and events. Founded by Aisling Kilroy, The Narrow Space is dedicated to celebrating creativity and craftsmanship, offering a carefully curated mix of Irish-made gifts and artwork.

Tell us about your retail business.

I like to think that The Narrow Space is a special space here in Clonmel! It is full of the creativity and energy of all our wonderful makers, most of whom are Irish. Our core customers are all living in the radius of Clonmel, discerning folk who love beautiful things – be it a simple card, a scented candle, a one off ceramic, a piece of jewellery, a print and lots more besides.

When did you first open?

2003

How did your retail journey begin?

I have always loved Irish art…I bought my first original piece when I was in 3rd year in Trinity and there began a life long journey of enjoying and buying original work – be it a painting or a piece of ceramic. After a family bereavement, I found myself living in Clonmel, working in marketing but ready for a change. A building became available on the pedestrian Mitchel Street – known locally as the Narrow Street…and The Narrow Space was born!

What kind of products or makers do you stock?

We have a wide range of makers – from well known brands such as Max Benjamin or The Handmade Soap Company to smaller makers such as Keva Ceramics from Thomastown in Kilkenny.

How do you choose the makers and products.

I suppose my first criteria is that the products have to appeal to me in some way! But there also has to be a commercial angle, in the sense that you want products that are well made, well presented and that represent a good value proposition for our customers. I am also concious that everybody’s wallet is not the same size! So I like a customer to be able to come in and find something beautiful for €20 as well as for €200!

What is your background in craft?

My background in craft is really only my love for it! I have never been a maker of beautiful pieces rather a lover of them.

What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a Made Local Retailer?

I think becoming a Made Local Retailer makes complete sense. To be part of a national campaign, with recognisable POS and a simple brand message in the busy world we live is fantastic for a small, independent retailer
