Séamus Gill uses silversmithing skills to create jewellery, silversmithing and sculpture. All his work is rooted in the art of silversmithing, using his skills with a hammer and anvil to directly form and shape silver or bronze.

This summer, he will share his expertise through a series of practical masterclasses. He is very passionate about sharing the skills of silversmithing and these workshops are perfect for anyone who wants to develop silversmithing skills to incorporate into their own practice.

This course is open to both DCCI members and members of the public.

Learning Outcomes

  • Making a bowl is one of the key silversmithing techniques. This two day workshop will guide you through the process of how to make a bowl using the two main silversmithing methods of forming; sinking and raising. The first bowl will be made using the technique of sinking and the second bowl will be made using the technique of raising. Gilding metal will be used which has very similar working qualities to silver at a fraction of the cost.
  • Learn fundamental silversmithing techniques such as annealing and sinking gilding metal, hammering a 3-dimensional hollow form from sheet metal, planishing and finishing hollow forms.
  • On completion of this short course you will gain the knowledge and skills to incorporate forging techniques into your own jewellery and silversmithing designs.

Who Should Attend

  • The workshop caters for those with basic metalworking skills up to professionals who want to learn more about forming metal. Tools and materials will be provided.

Day One:
This will provide a comprehensive overview of the appropriate techniques for using hammers and stakes in silversmithing to make a bowl. Then, through practical demonstration and hands on practice, learn by making your own bowl using the technique of sinking.

Day Two:
Building on the skills learned the first day, this day will focus on further demonstration and practice for you to gain proficiency in making your own bowl using the technique of raising.

Séamus Gill is an award winning Irish silversmith who uses traditional silversmithing skills to design and create elegant jewellery, silverware and sculpture. His unique designs evolve from his high level of skill and a deep understanding of the working qualities of silver. He has work in many public and private collections worldwide including the National Museum of Ireland and the Vatican Rome.

In this course, he will share his expertise through a series of practical masterclasses. He is very passionate about sharing the skills of silversmithing and these workshops are perfect for anyone who wants to develop silversmithing skills to incorporate into their own practice.
