Meet our Members

BY DESIGN is a collective of 15 diverse artists, creatives, and craft makers who have united to form an innovative network where handmade products can be showcased and sold. The group specialises in a wide range of disciplines, including visual arts, sculpture, woodworking, ceramics, textile design, jewellery making, and more.

Each member of the collective brings a distinct voice and perspective, offering customers a rich variety of products that reflect both traditional craftsmanship and contemporary trends. A core aim of the initiative is to create an environment where customers can meet the makers behind the products, learn about their creative processes, and even commission bespoke items.

The collective places strong emphasis on ethical production and sustainability, with many members using locally sourced materials. Born from a shared passion for creativity, BY DESIGN – A Local Story seeks to bring unique artisanal goods to a broader audience.

Tell us about your retail business.

We are a group of artists and crafts people who have come together to showcase and sell our work direct to the end consumer. We are unique because it is the makers who work in the shop so you get to meet and talk to a maker every day. We also provide classes and a meeting place for creativity in our gallery space.

When did you first open?

We first opened in 2020

How did your retail journey begin?

We met and became part of a local group selling art in Limerick city and county. At the start of covid we had to pivot our business from the tourism sector to target a local market. We moved location and now have the best of both worlds and haven’t looked back.

What kind of products or makers do you stock?

Local arts and crafts from the Limerick, Tipperary, Clare areas. We have a wide range of disciplines from art, jewellery, candles, ceramics, mixed media, clothing, accessories, glasswork, beauty, homeware, etc.

How do you choose the makers and products.

We choose makers based on the quality of their work and their individuality to keep a wide range of products available to our customers.

Why is supporting Irish makers important to your business?

It is important to us and our business as we are also makers and know how difficult it is to bring products to market and to showcase work to the end buyer.

How would you describe your store’s identity

We are local, unique, sustainable, Irish

What is your background in craft?

What do your customers love most about your in-store/online experience?

Our customers love the fact they can speak to a local maker. The also love that we are providing a unique shopping experience in the local area and also that they can get bespoke products made by local artists.

What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a Made Local Retailer?

Retail is a tough environment but worthwhile. We have the best of makers supplying us and the best customers coming through the door every day.
