Born in Dublin, Karena Ryan is an award-winning Visual Artist living in Tuam, County Galway. She is inspired by the past and nostalgia with inspiration drawn from literature, the history of a place and ancestry. She has a sustainable art practice and her work features Irish fabrics (tweed, linens) and vintage Foxford woollen mills blankets that she hand dyes. She is an advocate of working with native Irish grown wool from the Galway sheep. Her professional art practice embraces felting, weaving, hand embroidery, free motion embroidery and hand beading to create authentic tactile artworks. Her recent work includes artwork made from Irish grown wool and her vintage blanket collection features hand embroidered portraits onto vintage woollen blankets.
