Statement – 18.03.25
Contrary to some recent media coverage and public commentary, Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI) did not begin legal action against any individual craftsperson or group of craftspeople.
A legal letter was sent to a maker in May 2024, in order to reduce the risk of defamation proceedings by individuals named in a document that was written and circulated in March 2024.
The only reason that DCCI sent the letter in question was that potential legal action by other parties was a possibility.
DCCI now understands that the people referred to in that document do not intend to take any legal action. In that context, the letter of May 2024 no longer applies.
It is regrettable that this matter could not have been resolved sooner. DCCI had no desire to become embroiled in legal proceedings, however it had an obligation to protect its own position, and that of its employees and contractors.
DCCI has been working to find a way to resolve the situation and to create a space for productive discussions within the sector.

DCCI is keen to move beyond the current impasse and has written to a maker from the group in question, inviting them to meet with a view to resolving the issue.
