Mill Cove Gallery is one of Ireland’s leading champions of contemporary ceramics, having spent over twenty-five years supporting artists across all thirty-two counties and elevating ceramics into a fine art setting. As the only gallery in Ireland commissioning new ceramic artworks, and the founder of the Irish Ceramic Awards in 2007, it has played a pivotal role in raising national standards of design, decoration, and innovation. Its reputation now extends well beyond Ireland, with collectors across the UK, Europe, and the USA. Central to this legacy are The Two Johns — painter John Brennan and curator, publisher, and ceramics expert John Goode — whose creative partnership has shaped the gallery’s vision and impact. Together they have opened five galleries, ultimately establishing their permanent home in Kenmare in 2021, complete with a sculpture garden and restaurant at Mill Cove House.

What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a Made Local Retailer?
Stay true to your vision, but stay close to your customers. Build relationships — with artists, makers, and clients — because trust and consistency are what sustain a retail business over time. Invest in quality and originality rather than trends, and don’t be afraid to specialise; being known for something distinctive is far more powerful than trying to be everything to everyone. Finally, value the long game: nurture your community, support emerging talent, and let your retail space reflect passion, integrity, and genuine expertise.
How did your retail journey begin?
The journey began with a shared vision between John Brennan and John Goode to create a space where Irish ceramics and contemporary art could be presented with the respect and visibility they deserved. What started as a small, collaborative venture — combining Brennan’s artistic practice with Goode’s curatorial and publishing expertise — grew into a dedicated effort to support ceramic artists nationwide and raise the profile of the medium. Their passion, partnership, and belief in the potential of Irish craft set the foundation for what would become Mill Cove Gallery and its 25-year legacy.
