Chloë’s Papercraft was launched at the end of 2022 by Chloë Curtin who discovered her passion for all things paper while studying at IADT Dún Laoghaire. Having graduated with a degree in 3D Design, Modelmaking and Digital Art; it wasn’t long before she had invested in her own laser cutter and began creating bespoke miniature architectural models from coloured paper. Since then the product range of Chloë’s Papercraft has grown to include  3D architectural models, DIY craft kits, art prints and greeting cards. Drawing from the experience of growing up in Ireland, the aim of Chloë’s work is to cause an emotive response in spectators, whether the artwork evokes a sense of nostalgia or a little giggle, the goal is for her craft to have an impact.

My work is really quite varied day to day but I would say my most typical day would start with some admin and involve the manufacture of a 3D paper model. Modelmaking starts with the creation of cut files that can be used to laser cut the paper components needed to produce a model. Once all the tiny paper pieces are either hand cut with a scalpel or laser cut with my machine the production can begin (Of course all this work is frequently interrupted by visits from my dog Taylor wanting to play with her teddy!).

Experiment in every aspect of your craft business. Participate in new events, markets and online strategies, be adventurous with your craft style, make connections with as many other makers as you can, you never know what will work for you until you try.

Chloë's Papercraft

I’m torn between two answers for this question. Personally, in my studio, I love the moment when a model starts to take shape and I can add all the final details (miniature plant pots and the like) to really bring character to the piece.

However, I also adore the moment when a client first sees their completed paper model. Miniatures can spark a moment of nostalgia or excitement for their spectators and you truly cannot beat the feeling of emotionally moving another human with something you have created.

My Aisling McElwain handcrafted ceramic mug. It has the cutest teal florals motifs and is the perfect size for a hot chocolate!

What do you like least about your work?

As a small business owner you really have to take on a multitude of job descriptions; marketing, administration, accounting, maker, I could go on. As a creative this is definitely the aspect of my work that I find most challenging. It would be lovely to be able to create all day but you have to pay the bills too!

Probably wash my hands, I tend to end up with laser cutting soot or glue on my fingers!

What do you listen to?

A lot of Irish musicians; The Coronas, Roisin O, Lyra, Kingfishr…

What’s your favourite time of the day?

I’m a real night owl so I find I’m most productive from 20:00 onwards, there’s something about working in the quiet of the night that I adore. (Yes people do tell me my work hours are insane, but it works for me!).

What other maker in your discipline do you most look up to?

There are so many incredibly talented paper artists in the world that I’m struggling to narrow it down but if I had to I would say Laura K Sayers. Her use of paper to create artworks and illustrated scenes in such a vibrant style is so encouraging to me.

How do you start your day?

I start the day by washing my face with cold water and then having breakfast (preferably French toast).

Favourite meal?

Currently: Crispy Chicken Bao Buns from Fidelity in Smithfield
