Proper Dark

An immersive encounter with light, darkness, time and the human imagination, inviting visitors to slow down, step closer and discover what happens when design becomes an experience.

Proper Dark is an immersive light installation by Irish artist and industrial designer Anthony McCarthy, exploring the relationship between light, darkness, movement, time and perception.

Developed through decades of experimentation with sculptural light apparatus, the work occupies a space between art, industrial design, engineering and visual experience. Rather than presenting an object simply to be observed, Proper Dark invites the visitor to enter into a changing relationship with it.

Within the darkness, light travels through carefully constructed forms, creating shifting patterns, shadows, reflections and unexpected depths. As visitors move, the work changes; apparently fixed geometry becomes fluid, and the viewer becomes part of the experience.

The installation is an invitation to slow down. In a world increasingly filled with speed, screens and instant information, Proper Dark asks us to pause, look closely and allow curiosity to take over.

This is not simply an exhibition of objects. It is an encounter — a moment in which design, light and human perception meet, and where the familiar becomes strange again.

Proper Dark asks a simple question:

What might we discover if we stop rushing past things and give ourselves time to look?

Reflecting the Theme: Fáilte Future Europe

Proper Dark speaks to Fáilte Future Europe through a distinctly human experience of design: curiosity, connection and discovery.

At its heart, the installation asks visitors to slow down, look closely and engage directly with their surroundings. In doing so, it explores how design can influence not only what we see, but how we experience a place, how we interact with one another and how we perceive the world around us.

The work reflects the spirit of an Ireland that is both rooted in its own creative traditions and open to new possibilities. It brings together Irish art, industrial design, hand-built making, light, geometry and experimentation to create something that is contemporary, accessible and experiential.

The installation also offers a small but meaningful counterpoint to the speed of modern life. Rather than consuming an image or object instantly, visitors are invited to pause and discover through their own movement and perception.

In the context of Fáilte Future Europe, Proper Dark becomes an invitation: come in, slow down, look again and imagine what design might make possible.
