Meet our Members

Meet Marian, the designer and maker behind Bran Marion Nautical Bracelets, a family-run studio based in Slane, County Meath.

Inspired by Ireland’s rich maritime heritage, Marian crafts each bracelet by hand using durable sailing rope and stainless steel – symbolising strength, journeys, and connection. Blending traditional techniques with a clean, modern aesthetic, Bran Marion designs often feature meaningful colour combinations that let people carry a piece of their story, heritage, or travels with them. The brand is dedicated to creating authentic, high-quality pieces made to be worn every day and built to last.

What’s a typical day in the studio like for you?

A typical day usually starts early in the studio in Slane. I begin by preparing materials, cutting sailing rope to size, and assembling the stainless steel fittings used in the bracelets. Much of my time is spent carefully handcrafting each piece, making sure every bracelet is strong, comfortable, and finished to a high standard.

Throughout the day I also respond to customer messages, pack and ship orders, and occasionally work on new colour combinations or custom designs requested by customers. Because it is a small family-run studio, the work involves many different roles — from designing and crafting to packaging and sharing the work online.

What I enjoy most is the moment when a finished piece comes together and knowing it will travel from a small studio in Ireland to someone somewhere in the world who connects with it.

What do you like most about your work?

What I enjoy most is the process of creating something meaningful with my hands. Each bracelet starts as simple materials — sailing rope and steel — and becomes a finished piece that will travel from my studio in Ireland to someone somewhere in the world. Knowing that people wear these pieces as reminders of their roots, journeys, or memories is very rewarding.

Focus on developing your craft with patience and consistency. Building something meaningful takes time, and learning from both successes and mistakes is part of the process. It’s also important to stay authentic to your own ideas and values rather than simply following trends.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Much of my inspiration comes from Ireland’s maritime heritage and the symbolism of rope — strength, connection, and journey. I’m also inspired by colours, especially national colours and combinations that represent identity, heritage, or personal stories. Many ideas also come from customers who want something meaningful that reflects their background or experiences.

Is sustainability an important aspect of your business?

Yes, sustainability is an important part of my approach. I focus on creating durable pieces designed to last for many years rather than temporary fashion items. Producing in small batches and working directly from my studio also helps reduce unnecessary waste and overproduction.

What’s the most challenging part of your craft?

The most challenging part is maintaining the balance between craftsmanship and the many other responsibilities that come with running a small independent studio. While the creative side is very fulfilling, there are also logistics, customer service, and business tasks that require time and focus. However, those challenges are also part of what makes the journey rewarding.

What made you choose your discipline?

I have always been drawn to making things by hand and creating objects that people can wear and connect with. Working with rope felt natural because of its symbolism and strength. Over time, it developed into a design approach where simplicity, durability, and meaning come together in each bracelet.

What would you say to anyone thinking of becoming a DCCI member

Becoming part of a community like the Design & Crafts Council Ireland offers valuable opportunities to connect with other makers, share experiences, and learn from different disciplines. It helps strengthen the craft community and supports the visibility of Irish design both locally and internationally.
