David Shaw-Smith Legacy Award 2026
Design & Crafts Council Ireland (DCCI) is delighted to announce the 2026 David Shaw-Smith Legacy Award finalists.
Established in 2022, the David Shaw-Smith Legacy Award champions Ireland’s master craftspeople in later stages of their careers—recognising years of dedication, outstanding contribution, and the potential to continue shaping their craft through the support of a new project. It also honours the legacy of David Shaw-Smith, with his wife Sally, who produced and directed the acclaimed documentary series, Hands, and made over 138 television documentaries during his career.
We were impressed and encouraged by the skill, commitment and adventurous spirit of many of the applications. They do justice to the late David Shaw-Smith, whose passion for Irish craft was unbounded

The aim of the award
The award is intended to invest in the future of Irish craft and judges are encouraged to consider not only the applicants’ past achievements but their future potential and how they might enrich the Irish design and craft landscape.
Increased Award Funding
The award amount has been increased this year, strengthening our commitment to supporting excellence in Irish craft.
Awards:
David Shaw-Smith Legacy Award: €5,000
The David Shaw-Smith Legacy Award recognises excellence in Irish craft and supports makers in advancing significant work within their practice. The award amount has been increased this year to strengthen sector impact and opportunity.
Project Supports:
€2,000 for 5 Shortlisted Applicants
In addition to the main award, five shortlisted makers will each receive €2,000 in Project Support to help progress the development of their craft projects. This new support stream is designed to broaden access and uplift more makers across the sector.

This year’s finalists reflect exceptional skill, creativity and dedication to craft, celebrating the enduring legacy of David Shaw-Smith and the richness of Ireland’s craft tradition. The winner will be announced on 9 September 2026.
