An opening address by Tom Watts, Head of Design at Design & Crafts Council Ireland will kick off conversations with leaders and influencers.

The discussion will focus on Ireland’s plan for a National Design Centre central to us putting Irish design at the forefront of the world where it belongs. Speakers include the world renowned Tim Marlow, CEO, Design Museum London and Christian Bason, CEO, Danish Design Centre. They will be joined by Gerry Farrell, Tibradden Craft Farm and Fiona Chambers, UCC. The event will be moderated by Fiona Kearney, The Glucksman Gallery, UCC.

The event will aim to explore possible models, including the Danish Philanthropic model and The British Commercial model. Fiona Kearney (The Glucksman Gallery, UCC) will facilitate the panel discussion focusing on key questions around how an Irish National Design Centre may be imagined under various frameworks.

Highlights from our Launch Event in Cork City Hall

Timothy John Marlow OBE, a prominent British writer, broadcaster, and art historian, is the Director and Chief Executive of London’s Design Museum, having previously served as the Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Arts. Marlow is renowned for his extensive contributions to the art world, having lectured on art and culture in over 40 countries and presented over 100 documentaries for radio and television.


 

Marlow’s written works have been featured in esteemed publications such as The Times, The Guardian, and The Independent on Sunday. He founded Tate: The Art Magazine in 1993 and served as the Artistic Director of the Royal Academy of Arts from 2014 to 2019. Marlow’s expertise also extends to academia, where he acts as a visiting lecturer at Winchester School of Art and an examiner on the Sculpture MA, showcasing his multifaceted involvement in the art and cultural spheres.

DCCI Irish Design Week 2023. Expand: Stretching the Future by Design; A Conversation with Christian Bason.

Christian Bason, Ph.D. is the CEO of DDC – Danish Design Center. His role entails setting direction for strategic initiatives, mission-oriented innovations methodology, redesigning organizations, and capacity for driving societal transitions by design. Christian is a frequent keynote speaker and presenter on design as a method and mindset for sustainable change at home and abroad.


 

Christian has been published in, amongst others, Harvard Business Review and Stanford Social Innovation Review and has taught executives at Oxford Saïd Business School, Henley MBA, the European School of Administration, and Copenhagen Business School.

I view design as an approach to creating better futures through three different dimensions: to better understand problems and opportunities from a human perspective; to expand the range of ideas available for decision-makers, and; to shape, test and refine potential solutions with the users, customers and citizens they are intended for.
